Muckrach Castle in Scotland

The Group

The family group has centuries of experience across a variety of industries and geographies.

There are two businesses currently within the family stewardship that are most similar to Elvetham. One is a rural estate in Scotland, the other an urban estate in Birmingham.

Muckrach Estate, Speyside

Muckrach Estate became part of the family group in the 1960s and is situated in a magnificently rural, yet accessible, location in the Scottish Highlands. Muckrach Castle itself provides luxury self catering accommodation. The remainder of the estate is primarily comprised of mixed farmland, moorland and forestry, with a small local residential and commercial property portfolio, most of which works in conjunction with the Estate business.

The in-hand farm, Ballintomb, is managed by George Rae and supported by Strutt & Parker.

Calthorpe Estates, Birmingham

An urban estate in Edgbaston (Birmingham) has been owned by the Calthorpe family since 1717. It incorporates one of the UK’s largest urban conservation areas

As the locality's leading property investor/developer, the business sees itself as responsible for providing opportunities for the community as a whole to evolve and prosper. The Estate is a thriving place to live and work. Medical facilities, renowned centres of educational excellence and the highest international standards of leisure facilities (including Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Edgbaston Golf Club and Edgbaston Priory Club) are all within the estate.

A commitment to sustainable development is illustrated by the newly developed 107,000 sq ft Grade A office accommodation at 8 Calthorpe Road (the HQ of The Binding Site Corporation), the Estate's second building to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.

Calthorpe Estates has recently redeveloped the heart of Edgbaston, anchored by a Morrisons Supermarket, and continues to regenerate the areas around it. It has also promoted a series of redevelopments at Pebble Mill that will feed into the City's "medical quarter", and led a mixed-use development at Edgbaston Mill.
